Portuguese Language

The official language of Portugal is Portuguese. Like Romanian, Spanish, Italian and French.

Portuguese language is one of the Romance languages. Portuguese is modern descendant of Latin, and also owes its importance (as the second Romance language, after Spanish) largely to its position as the language of Brazil, where more than 150 million people speak it. In Portugal itself there are about 10 million speakers. It is estimated that there are also some 4,6 million Portuguese speakers in Africa.

In many schools of town the English or French is the second language. In the typical tourist areas like Lisbon, Algarve, and Funchal (Madeira) the language barrier is not a big problem, at least not among the younger generation.

Actually there are five main Portuguese dialect groups:
• Northern, or Galician
• Central, or Beira
• Southern (Lisbon, Alentejo and Algarve)
• Insular (The dialects of Madeira and the Azores)
• Brazilia
